Colombian state generator Isagen has submitted a power supply proposal to Venezuelan state power company Edelca, the former’s general manager Luis Rico announced.

In 2008, Isagen signed a supply agreement with Edelca to help Venezuela cover demand that was renewed in April last year and extended again in September.

The generator last year exported 282GWh – versus 104GWh in 2008 – to Venezuela that brought in 61.6bn pesos (US$32.5mn) or 4.4% of Isagen’s revenue.

There have not been any payment problems because the energy is prepaid, Rico said in a webcast.

Isagen’s shipments, however, are conditioned by resolutions issued by Colombia’s power and gas regulator CREG that calls for exports to come from power generated by liquid fuels as long as these are not required for local demand.

The resolutions aim to guarantee the supply of gas and hydro generation to cover Colombian demand.

In related news, the executive said Colombia is prepared to overcome weather phenomenon El Niño should it extend to June.
