Peruvian generator Kallpa Generaciуn has begun commercial operations of new capacity at its gas-fired plant in Chilca, south of Lima, Kallpa parent Inkia Energy CEO Javier Garcнa told BNamericas.
Grid operator COES authorized the start of operations after the supply of 198MW, which makes Chilca the largest thermo plant in the country with around 570MW, said Garcнa.
The official added that a combined cycle project to expand capacity at Chilca’s three units continues on schedule.
Some US$400mn will be invested in this project which will take capacity to 850MW around mid-2012.
Korean contractor Posco Engineering & Construction was awarded a contract to install a 280MW turbine. Kallpa also has secured financing from a local bond issue for US$172mn and a syndicated loan for US$105mn.
