A jelly and jam manufacturer has some unsweet news for Memphis: J. M. Smucker Co. plans to close its plant near the Perkins/Winchester area by summer 2013.

Smucker has made jellies, jam, fruit syrups and ice cream toppings at 4740 Burbank since 1969.

The company is restructuring its supply chain, building a new facility in Orrville, Ohio, and closing its plants in Memphis and Ste. Marie, Quebec, according to a press release issued today.

A 2001 feature on the Memphis plant in The Commercial Appeal reported the operation employed 165 workers and turned out 58 million pounds of jellies and preserves a year.

Tim Smucker, board chairman and co-CEO, stated: “… It was difficult given the effect on employees, their families, and the communities related to the impacted facilities.

“We appreciate the contributions of our employees and are committed to treating them with fairness and respect as we transition these facilities over the next several years.”
