A NOT-FOR-PROFIT marine science group that has won more than £400,000 of new business for Welsh firms over the past year, is hoping the figure could rise to £1m in the next 12 months.
After securing a grant for Anglesey Sea Zoo, the Bridge Marine Science Group is now turning its attention to South Wales. Business development manager Jason Priest believes that with around 1,680 miles of coast, Wales is well placed to lead the way in marine conservation.
The £1,200 grant gained by the group for Anglesey Sea Zoo was used to help educate school children in the importance of marine conservation for a “Science on the Beach” project.
It also paved the way for BMSG to apply for a much larger grant for a marine education centre at the sea zoo, which will help boost the local economy further.
BMSG, an independent cluster group that’s supported by the European Regional Development Fund, has more than 200 members.
It offers support for small and medium-sized marine businesses, including help with applying for funds as well as dedicated networking events.
Mr Priest, based in Menai Bridge, said: “The marine industry is a key driver in Wales becoming an inter- nationally competitive economy.”
