FedEx burnished its environmental credentials Tuesday with release of a 2009 Citizenship Report touting the company’s EarthSmart initiative and improvements in the express company’s carbon footprint.
Since 2005, FedEx has reduced aircraft emissions 8.33 percent and boosted fleet efficiency 14.1 percent, the report said. Corporate goals call for 20 percent improvements by 2020.
Mitch Jackson, vice president, environmental affairs and sustainability, said, “FedEx has long practiced practical environmentalism, using innovation, collaboration and leadership to create environmental benefits that also have business benefits. EarthSmart will offer a more formal structure that will allow us to engage team members, customers, shareowners and community stakeholders to help us achieve our environmental goals.”
FedEx EarthSmart was developed in collaboration with Esty Environmental Partners, a sustainability management consultancy founded by Yale professor Dan Esty, author of “Green to Gold.” EarthSmart includes business solutions, workplace culture and community outreach.
Hybrid-electric pickup and delivery vehicles were the first equipment to receive EarthSmart logos.
The Citizenship Report said FedEx is supporting the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy in a study, due out in the second half of 2010, that explores relationships between a nation’s environmental performance and efforts to increase access to other countries and economies.
