A three day strike at Peruvian miner El Brocal’s Huaraucaca concentrator plant affected the treatment of about 15,000t of base metal concentrates, general manager Ysaac Cruz told BNamericas by email.

Production of zinc, lead and copper concentrates stopped on Saturday (Mar 13) when 248 unionized workers walked off the job after failing to reach an agreement with the company for a new contract during collective bargaining, Cruz said.

Employees returned to work on Tuesday after the company reached an agreement with two unions, Peru’s ministry of labor said in a statement.

According to the ministry, workers will receive a monthly family allowance of 23.50 soles, about US$8.20, for their spouse or partner and 11.75 soles for children under 18 years old. They will also receive 194 soles/y for each child in primary or secondary schooling. Office workers will also receive a monthly salary increase of 114 soles.

Cruz said the strike did not affect operations at El Brocal’s mines, which are located in central Peru’s Pasco department and include the open pit Tajo Norte zinc-lead-silver deposit, the Marcapunta Norte copper unit and the San Gregorio zinc mine.

El Brocal is a subsidiary of Buenaventura (NYSE: BVN), Peru’s largest miner.
