About 50,000 unionized workers at 18 mines are planning a national strike on June 30, the head of Peru’s mining, metals and steelworkers federation FNTMMSP Luis Castillo told BNamericas.

Castillo said the decision to strike was made on March 27 during the union’s annual meeting.

The FNTMMSP is demanding that Peru’s government implement two laws. The first is related to creating a pension system, while the second deals with an increase in profit sharing at mining companies.

A congressional aide told BNamericas by email that the pension law was approved by congress on October 27, 2009, while the profit sharing law has yet to be authorized.

Workers from FNTMMSP are currently on strike at three mines in Peru.

Castillo confirmed that unionized workers began a work stoppage on Monday at Chinese-owned iron ore producer Shougang Hierro Perú over increased salaries and distribution of profits.

Meanwhile, workers at local miner Buenaventura’s (NYSE: BVN) Orcopampa gold mine in Arequipa region walked off the job over the weekend, while workers at US-owned Doe Run Perú’s Cobriza mine began a strike on March 23.

Castillo said union representatives from Cobriza were scheduled to meet with government officials on Monday.
