Brazilian federal energy group Petrobras (NYSE: PBR) will launch operations at its Mexilhão platform (PMXL-1) in the fourth quarter this year, gas and energy director Maria das Graças Foster told BNamericas.
“We have postponed operations at the platform due to strategic reasons, but we are all set for the Mexilhão rig to start operations in the fourth quarter,” the executive said.
In February, Petrobras postponed bringing production to maximum levels at the offshore Mexilhão and Uruguá-Tambaú gas fields because of cheaper natural gas imports, BNamericas reported previously.
The Mexilhão rig will be Brazil’s biggest fixed gas platform, capable of producing up to 15Mm3/d of natural gas. It will be installed in the Santos basin, 145km off the coast of São Paulo state in water depths of 172m, according to Petrobras.
The gas produced at Mexilhão will be offloaded via a pipeline to the Monteiro Lobato gas treatment unit (UTGCA) in the city of Caraguatatuba, from where it will be transported over the 96km Caraguatatuba-Taubaté gas pipeline to the existing network.
