A PENTECOSTAL church in Pembrokeshire is investing in a new £2.5m place of worship.

Rising congregations has meant Calvary Pentecostal Church in Haverfordwest needs larger premises for church-goers drawn across Pembrokeshire

The church has drawn up proposals for a new building to accommodate 500 people, which also caters for a range of activities for all ages.

The present church in Trafalgar Road, Haverfordwest, was built in 1973, and regularly attracts large congregations. It has played a role in promoting multi-racial harmony in the area, which has a growing immigrant population.

Calvary is in talks with Pembrokeshire County Council about a new church complex at Withybush, Haverfordwest.

The church’s pastor, the Rev Adrian Vaughan, said: “The land has its own access. We believe it would sit very well between existing houses and the proposed business site and would bring lasting benefits.”

He said that as well as catering for a larger congregation, the church hoped to provide conference space, training for young Christians who wanted to enter the ministry, and a youth club.

The project would generate economic benefits for the area, providing work for builders, materials suppliers and tradespeople, he said.

Mr Vaughan, whose father was born in Pembrokeshire, came from Birmingham to establish the present church in 1973, when many chapels in the county were dying out. The congregation was quickly built up and has continued to grow.

“We have an excellent relationship with other churches in the area and hold united services,” Mr Vaughan said.

“We now want a new church that will be not just for the county but for an international community, attracting speakers from all parts of the world. We are excited about the project and look forward to working with the local authority to try to achieve it.”
