Chile’s public works ministry (MOP) is open to analyzing concession auctions to speed up the country’s reconstruction process, the public works minister, Hernán de Solminihac, told BNamericas.

MOP is currently drawing up a massive reconstruction plan to be financed by the state and the private sector following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit central-southern Chile on February 27.

The earthquake and ensuing tsunami caused extensive damage to ports, airports, highways, bridges, railways, homes, businesses and other infrastructure.

“We are open to all alternatives and will carry out the necessary options, in accordance with the Chilean legal framework,” de Solminihac said.

New concessions will facilitate the reconstruction process, as they will reduce stress on the public budget.

PRIORITIES

MOP has established three priorities: to improve connectivity from regions V-IX; to fully restore potable water services; and to rebuild infrastructure related to the productive sector, the minister said.

At the same time, the ministry is constantly updating its data base to establish the extent of infrastructure damage and to determine reconstruction priorities, de Solminihac said.

Authorities will allow some planned investment projects to be carried out normally as they work on the reconstruction plan, said de Solminihac, adding that the main goal is to keep the country going and not let it grind to a halt following the earthquake.
