NASHVILLE — Shelby County’s jobless rate fell to 10.8 percent in February, down half a percentage point from January’s revised rate of 11.3 percent, the state Department of Labor & Workforce Devellopment reported today.
The rate is slightly above the Tennessee rate of 10.7 percent for February and is the highest among the four largest counties: Knox County’s 8.4 percent, Davidson County’s 9.3 percent and Hamilton County’s 9.7 percent.
The U.S. rate for February was 9.7 percent.
The January to February jobless rate declined in 78 Tennessee counties, incrased in 10 and was unchanged in seven. Two southern Middle Tennessee counties that border each other — Marshall and Lincoln counties — recorded the state’s highest and lowest jobless rate, at 19.1 percent and 8 percent respectively.
Among cities, Memphis had the highest rate of unemployment among the four largest, at 11.6 percent, followed by Nashville’s 9.3, Knoxville’s 9.7 and Chattanooga’s 10.4 percent.
In Shelby County suburbs whose rates are reported by the state, Bartlett registered an 8.7 percent jobless rate in February, Collierville 7.5, and Germantown 7.2.
Fayette County registered 11.9 percent joblessness and Tipton County 12.6.
