APPLE iPads were launched in the UK on Friday in a blaze of publicity – and already a Swansea company is poised to cash in on the craze.

Mobile TV network firm Yamgo has released a version of its live streaming service especially for the iPad, to coincide with the launch of the new Apple device in the UK.

The beta release by the mobile TV and video specialists is an upgrade to its iPhone service and means that all users of the new Apple gadget can now access mobile entertainment at the same quality as users of the iPhone.

The new service also helps broadcasters and content owners with a way of monetising content across all mobile devices.

Yamgo’s latest offering uses the existing video player in the user’s mobile device and therefore does not require an application download.

Users simply go to the Yamgo website on their iPad, register and start watching free, live TV.

UK consumers can enjoy a wide selection of live channels and global users have access to thousands of video clips from football to comedy.

The iPad, released at a time when consumer interest in mobile technology is growing rapidly, is widely expected to dominate the industry over the coming months. Yamgo’s beta service will make it possible for iPad users to experience mobile entertainment in the same way as Android, Nokia and iPhone viewers.

Originally, the company offered extreme sports videos on mobiles but has since developed its technology rapidly and is now a leader in the mobile TV field.

Yamgo recently moved into Technium Digital at Swansea University, where it develops next-generation technology for streaming television on mobiles.

Content providers can use Yamgo to manage, distribute and make money from their live TV streams, webcams and video clips through mobile networks worldwide.

Its technology platform has been designed to maximise compatibility across networks and phones.

It does this by dynamically adapting video streams to address the different needs of more than 1,000 mobile devices and networks from 2.5G to Wi-Fi.

Swansea University graduate and Yamgo chief executive and founder Ian Mullins said: “The larger screen, portability and ease of use of the iPad combined with computing power make the device ideal for mobile TV and video.

“I believe Apple has created a new market segment for mobile entertainment and the launch of our beta service means iPad users can now access an ever increasing number of live UK channels and a constantly updated catalogue of videos.”

The company also provides mobile applications, free-to- view TV, content licensing and advertising to clients from Greenpeace TV to Guitarist TV.

Yamgo, which is being supported by the Welsh Assembly Government through the Single Investment Fund, plans to create 23 jobs over the next two years.

At the height of the hype over the televised leaders’ debates, the company reported its highest audience for streamed content with around 5,000 people watching the last debate live on their mobile phone via its technology platform.
