Honduran national water authority Sanaa is meeting with public and private sector representatives to coordinate efforts for the national government to declare a state of emergency due to low water levels in capital Tegucigalpa, Sanaa spokesperson Allan Aragуn told BNamericas.

Sanaa proposed that the national government declare a state of emergency at a ministerial meeting earlier this week. However, President Porfirio Lobo responded by suggesting the request be made jointly with representatives from different sectors.

“The president requested that we reach a consensus with other sectors in order to make another proposal later. Sanaa is therefore inviting different unions and institutional groups to work with us on this initiative,” Aragуn said.

“Yesterday we met with the chamber of trade and industry, the engineering chamber and local government authorities to talk about the initiative,” he added.

The new proposal will be presented on World Water Day, which is celebrated on March 22.

WATER RATIONING INCREASES

Due to the low levels of water available in the Los Laureles and Concepciуn reservoirs, which serve Tegucigalpa, Sanaa will increase water rationing starting this week.

All municipalities in Tegucigalpa will now receive potable water for ten hours twice a week, according to Aragуn, who added that the new schedule will be in place from March 16 to March 31.

If the water shortage continues, a new schedule will be established for April and then for May, according to Aragуn. Meanwhile, most neighborhoods are receiving potable water from trucks.

“Many sectors which are located in the city’s higher sections are having problems receiving water through the distribution network. Because of this, we are combining the existing distribution with special trucks used to transport water,” Aragуn said.

In the past, trucks were used only to transport water to poor neighborhoods. Now, they are also being used to provide water to Tegucigalpa’s high class residential areas, according to Aragуn.

Sanaa currently provides 1,900l/s of water but demand is at approximately 3,000l/s, according to previous reports.
