Gains in full-time employment were mostly offset by part-time job losses, the government agency said.
In September, employment among 15- to 24-year-olds fell by 42,000.
“Losses in recent months have erased gains from the start of the year, bringing youth employment back to levels of a year ago,” said Statistics Canada.
Employment among those aged 55 and over, meanwhile, continued its longstanding upward trend, adding 37,000 jobs in September and posting one of the highest rates of growth among all demographic groups over the past 12 months.
During the month, employment declined in professional, scientific and technical services, yet still remained strong for the year, posting one of the highest rates of growth (7.2 percent) among all major industries.
There were also increases in transportation and warehousing, bringing total gains in this sector for the year to 30,000 or up 3.8 percent.
There were no notable changes in the other industries, Statistics Canada said.
