Runaway inflation, low interest rates and slow wage growth are threatening the retirement plans of the over-55s, according to a new study.

The Aviva Real Retirement Report, which monitors the finances of older people in the UK, found that over-55s average income increased by just 0.65% in past year. The insurance giant calculated that “grey” inflation rose by 4.7% over the same period.

The report found that 73% of over-55s fear the impact of the rising cost of living over the next six months and that many had begun to pay down debt and increase savings to compensate for their dwindling income.

The most severely affected group were the over-75s who have seen their monthly income fall from £1,416 to £1,178 over the past 12 months

Recent retirees aged between 65-74 saw their monthly income increase slightly over the past year from £1,360 to £1,426, while pre-retirees, aged between 55-64 saw a fall from £1,352 to £1,324. The perce

UK consumers are shunning online grocers and returning to the supermarket aisles, according to a study published in the European Journal of Marketing.

Researchers from Kingston University in London found people who switch to internet retailers do so only temporarily.

This will be busy week for economic data. The key releases will be the ISM manufacturing index on Friday, Case-Shiller house prices (April) on Tuesday, and auto sales on Friday.

Some of these releases will show ongoing weakness such as the ISM manufacturing index and the Chicago PMI. The regional surveys suggest the ISM index will be in the low 50s or possibly below 50 in June (below 50 would indicate contraction for manufacturing).

However other releases might show some improvement such as auto sales and pending home sales. Of special interest will be the Case-Shiller index for April (a three month average of prices in February, March and April). Other house price indexes have indicated prices increased in April, however, because of the averaging, Case-Shiller might still show a decline.
